Art is like a lady.
Do not lose you manners
And wait until she speaks to you.
(Waggerl)

Dear friends of the Mikulov Art Symposium "dílna",
Please allow me to introduce this year's Art Symposium with a quotation as well. The Art Symposium has become a solid part of our rich cultural summer of Mikulov. I am very happy that a great number of artists wish to come here and that it also attracts guests from abroad.
Our town has a lot to offer to the artists who have to Mikulov during one of the years the Symposium has been held. It is not just the friendly atmosphere but also the beauty of our town that has inspired them. For the last thirteen years, many works have been created that remain in the property of the town for future generations. Recently, these works have been exhibited abroad as well – in Vienna and St. Pölten in Austria, in Bratislava; this year in Mistelbach and in New York. It goes without the slightest doubt that the Mikulov Art Symposium "dílna" is a great asset to our town. This year marks the end of the fifth mayoral
term since 1989. From the beginning, all representatives of the town have been very well disposed towards the Symposium and it is my firm belief that the representatives elected in this year's elections will support it and create favorable conditions for its further development. Let me now thank all those who came up with the idea at very the beginning, all who took part in organizing it, all participants and friends of the Symposium. We must not forget all the sponsors who made the existence of this project possible with their generous support. I wish you good luck in the coming years.

Eduard Kulhavý
Mayor of the Town of Mikulov

Ladies and gentlemen, friends of the Mikulov Art Symposium,
It is an honour for me to say that for the fourth year, Česká spořitelna has been the general partner of the Mikulov Art Symposium that has now been held for the 13th time. Česká spořitelna supports a number of projects from all fields of culture and I will only mention some of the key projects – the Prague Spring Festival of classical music or the Colours of Ostrava, one of the most significant contemporary music festivals in the country. Česká spořitelna also supports theatre – for example the Vinohrady Theater in Prague. We also support visual art and design. Apart from the Mikulov Art Symposium, we sponsor Designblok or Tranzit as some of the representative projects in contemporary art.
Support of culture is therefore a natural and organic part of Česká spořitelna's activities in the Czech Republic. The Mikulov Art Symposium "dílna" 2006 has shown again that supporting talented artists from the Czech Republic makes good sense. Variety of ideas, originality and diversity of art works and styles, sometimes a shocking personal testimony – all this under the leadership of the curator Eva Eisler together with the exceptional organizational and technical cooperation of the Avedon company – brought us a great cultural experience and enriched the art collection of the town of Mikulov. The goal of the project – capturing contemporary visual art – is doubtlessly being fulfilled while the Symposium also contributed to the modern art collection and brought the art to the people living in Mikulov or visiting it.
This cannot be diminished by the rainy exhibition opening where we witnessed the devotion of the solitary performer at the Chateau courtyard. Keep up the good work!

Director of the Commercial Center in Brno, Česká spořitelna, a. s.

Dear friends,
There are only a few events in the arts that managed to gain such a reputation with the public like the Mikulov Art Symposium "dílna". As a representative of one of the partners of the event – the South Moravian Region – I am happy that its 13th year that was held in Mikulov in July and August last year, kept its high quality, diversity of genres as well as originality. The catalogue you are now reading shows that beyond doubt. The four summer weeks during which the invited artists work in the chateau of Mikulov are filled not only with creative work but also with encounters and debates about the meaning of art in today's world. It is the dialogue that makes it possible for us to see the world with the eyes of another person. And this is just as important as the creation itself. I wish you many nice moments going through the catalogue and I look forward to meeting you at "dílna" in Mikulov.

Milan Venclík
First Deputy Governor of the South Moravian Region
