Vladimír Houdek

Vladimír Houdek (1984) has been studying painting since 2007 at Prague’s Academy of Fine Arts in the studio of Vladimír Skrepl. In the words of the artist and curator Michal Pěchouček: “For the ‘association of artists and friends of the academic environment’, he is a like an apparition. He suddenly appeared and very soon found himself… Since the beginning, he has always perceived painting as an intensive process and uncompromising expression requiring personal emotional investment…”. In 2011 alone, his work appeared at four independent exhibitions: Melancholy in the atrium of the Pražák Palace of Moravian Gallery in Brno, Magion at the Blansko Town Gallery, Strings on your Fingers in Prague’s 35 m2 Gallery, and White Dresses at Pavilion Gallery, also in Prague (the latter two along with Monika Žáková).

In 2010, he received the Critics’ Award for Young Painters. His paintings from the last two years are marked with generous geometrical layouts built with thick layers of paint, often resembling deposits of tar. His reflection of modernist abstract morphology appears depressing. His paintings are existential emblems, colourful sparks of emotions gushing from the dark marshes of the pastes. Whenever a figure appears in his painting, it is usually entangled in geometric structures.
